YouTube is testing a new feature that automatically generates video summaries using artificial intelligence.
Late last month, YouTube detailed a new feature experiment on its platform that uses artificial intelligence to create automatically generated video summaries on its platform to help users understand the content of a video before watching.
The experiment was announced via the “YouTube Tests and Experiments Features” support page on July 31, explaining that it will make things easier for users “read a short summary of a video and decide if it’s suitable.”

The AI-generated video summaries, which should initially appear on the watch and search pages, certainly are “useful and gives you a quick overview of what a video is about”, but YouTube explains that they are not there to replace the usual video descriptions we are used to. Descriptions are still something creators themselves have to write for their viewers.
Finally, the AI auto-generated summaries experiment is currently ongoing with a very limited number of videos (in English) and a closed group of viewers.

In other AI-related news, YouTube also began testing AI-generated quizzes on mobile devices in early July. The support page says the feature is expected “to make it easier for people to learn about the topics they are interested in.”

The experiment has been running for about a month on the YouTube mobile app Home feed globally and has been rolled out worldwide “a small percentage of viewers on iOS and Android who have recently watched select English-language and educational videos.”
These two experiments are just two of many others available right now and may never be fully implemented.
