It is estimated that around 40% of fruit and vegetables end up in the trash due to the prejudices and myths we all have about their ripeness. In order to counteract this food waste, the Makro retail chain has developed these ingenious labels which, based on their colour, provide ideas for enjoying certain types of fruit and vegetables.
Under the motto “Sticker Salvavidas”, these stickers are stuck on the most common types of fruit and vegetables in the supermarket to give advice on consumption and to prevent them from ending up in the bin prematurely. For example, a very ripe banana can be used in pastries because it’s much sweeter, or a very green papaya goes great with the citrus note in a lemonade.
Thanks to the work of the Gray Colombia agency, the average lifespan of fruit and vegetables at Makro customers has been increased by 6 days thanks to this initiative. That means 70 tonnes less food was wasted in the week of launch, a truly impressive number.
