Google revises its display rules

Previously highly visible on organic search results, Google has announced that it has completely revised its conditions for displaying thumbnails associated with schema.org FAQPage and How-to markup. Here’s what changes.

Will FAQPage and How-To rich snippets be removed by Google soon?

In a chirp of 8 August 2023, Google has announced that it is reviewing the rules for displaying enhanced results associated with FAQPage and How-To markup.

Google FAQ page

FAQ Page markup is now limited to official government sites

From now on, FAQ Page rich snippets will only appear on government authority sites and health authority sites.

For all other sites, the FAQPage markup will no longer automatically trigger the display of an FAQ under the organic result as it did up until now.

Markup How-To now limited to desktop SERPS

As for the How-To markup, the latter will no longer allow it showing a rich snippet only in search results dedicated to computers.

All results pages consulted from smartphones will no longer have this enriched extract.

Good to know: For webmasters with a mobile version and a separate desktop version: you will always need to integrate the How-To markup into the source code of the mobile version of your site to allow the enriched excerpt to appear on Google desktop search results (thanks to mobile first indexing).

What impacts for webmasters and natural referencing?

These changes can negatively impact websites that properly optimize these markups for a higher click-through rate (CTR) in search results.

While the actual impact of these site-wide changes should be limited, optimizing your title tags and meta descriptions for CTR will be crucial to limiting the negative impact on SEO click-through rate as much as possible.

Some frequently asked questions about this change:

Is it still relevant to tag your FAQs with FAQPage?

If the markup system already exists on your site, there’s no risk in leaving it in place, so we recommend that you leave it as is.

For a new site or a site that didn’t have it set up, the benefit of setting up this markup is no longer demonstrated.

Should these markups be removed from your sites?

Google has made it clear that these markups have no negative impact on your sites, so there’s no need to remove them.

How do I track the impression decline of these rich snippets?

If you want to analyze the evolution of impressions on these rich snippets for your site, it is possible through the Search Console and the “Performance in search results” report.

To do this, simply add the “Appearance in Rich Results” filter and then select the “Rich Results FAQ” option.

Once you select this option, you will be able to analyze the decline in impressions of FAQPage rich snippets on your site.

Which countries are affected by this change?

This change is global, all countries and all languages are affected.

What is the expected end date of the deployment?

Initiated on August 8, 2023, this change is expected to be fully implemented internationally by August 20, 2023.
